The following protocol is the cleansing system I complete twice a year:
Day 1 – Whole Fruit and Vegtables
Day 2 – Whole Fruit
Day 3-5 – Juicing
Day 6 – Whole Fuit
Day 7 – Whole Fruit and Vegetables
The concept of the preparation phase prior to starting the juicing is to slowly kick-start the process as juicing alone can make you feel nauseous from toxin release, caffeine withdrawals and to provide you with fibre to keep your bowels regular as juicing can induce constipation. On finishing the juicing, re-introducing whole fruit and vegetables allows your body to adapt to whole foods again, which is really important. After a period of juicing, your stomach will shrink so returning to a normal diet on finishing will cause unwanted bloating and flatulence. Following day 7, reintroduce lean protein and slow-releasing carbohydrate sources slowly. This will help you sustain any weight loss you may have experienced over the course of the week!
When choosing juices, ensure it is from fresh sources as reconstituted juices are loaded with artificial sweeteners so defeats the purpose of the detox in the first place! I got my pre-made juices from GASTA (located on Thomas Street, Limerick), which consisted of 4 juices drank in a particular manner over the course of the day. This was not only super convenient but it followed the Phase I and Phase II Liver Detoxification pathways, which is of paramount importance when cleansing.
